1982 The first deal

Four decades at the table

The tournament was first held in 1982, when the Icelandic Bridge Federation, Reykjavík Bridgeclub and Icelandair combined their forces and started an annual bridge festival — the Icelandair Open. That first year, 36 pairs and 6 teams took part, with teams from Norway among the invited guests. Alan Sontag and Peter Weichel took the pairs title, and Karl Sigurhjartarson's team won the teams event.
